In thread milling, three-axis linkage CNC machine and thread milling cutter are the two indispensable elements. The following introduces several common types of thread milling cutters:
(1)Cylindrical thread milling cutter
The shape of the cylindrical thread milling cutter is similar to the combination of a cylindrical vertical milling cutter and a thread tap(see Figure2 above, Figure2 below is a conical pipe thread milling cutter). However, its thread cutting edge is different from the tap, and there is no spiral lead on the tool, and the spiral lead during machining is achieved by the machine tool movement. Due to this special structure, this tool can process right-hand threads as well as left-hand threads, but it is not suitable for processing threads with larger lead.
Common cylindrical thread milling cutters can be divided into coarse pitch and fine pitch according to their uses. In view of the processing efficiency and durability, most of the thread milling cutters are made of hard alloy material and can be coated with various coatings to meet the needs of special material processing. Cylindrical thread milling cutters are suitable for medium and small diameter thread milling of steel, cast iron and non-ferrous metal materials, with stable cutting and high durability. The disadvantage is that the tool manufacturing cost is high, the structure is complex and the price is expensive.
(2)Machine-mounted thread milling cutters and blades
Machineable milling cutters for threads are suitable for larger diameters(such asD%26gt;25mm)for thread cutting. The features include easy-to-manufacture cutting blades, low cost, and some thread milling cutters can cut on both sides, but they are slightly less impact-resistant than solid thread milling cutters. Therefore, this type of cutter is often recommended for cutting aluminum alloy materials. Figure3shows two types of machineable thread milling cutters and blades. Figure3ais a machineable single-blade thread milling cutter and a triangular double-sided blade, and Figure3bis a machineable double-blade thread milling cutter and a rectangular double-sided blade.
(3)Combination multi-station special thread boring and milling cutter
The characteristic of the combined multi-position special thread boring and milling cutter is that it has multiple edges in one cut, completing multi-position processing in one go, which can save auxiliary time such as tool change, significantly improving productivity. Figure4 shows an example of processing with a combined multi-position special thread boring and milling cutter. The workpiece needs to be processed with internal threads, chamfers, and platformsd4. If the single-position automatic tool change method is used for processing, the single-piece processing time is about30s. However, if the combined multi-position special thread boring and milling cutter is used for processing, the single-piece processing time is only about5s.
